It\u2019s also a time to gauge how far women have come in achieving true equality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people are aware of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aauw.org\/resources\/research\/simple-truth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gender pay gap<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of women earning on average only 82 cents to every dollar earned by men. Another troubling financial reality people are less aware of is the life insurance gender gap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifehappens.org\/barometer2021\">Initial findings from the 2021 Insurance Barometer Study<\/a>, by Life Happens and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limra.com\/helpprotectourfamilies\">LIMRA<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show that just <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">47% of women have life insurance, versus 58% of men. That\u2019s a big difference. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">But many women may have an inkling that this disparity isn&#8217;t good: 32% of those with no life insurance say they need coverage, and 11% of those with coverage admit they need more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Reasons Behind the Life Insurance Gender Gap<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Women\u2019s lower earnings lead to less coverage.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Life insurance coverage limits are often a multiple of your annual earnings. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/pdf\/wkyeng.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, men earn an average of $55,744 while women earn an average of $46,488. Using a common multiplier of 10 (with 10 times your salary being a general rule of thumb for how much life insurance you might need) would mean the average woman could end up with $925,600 less coverage than an average man.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><b><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Women\u2019s unpaid labor is undervalued. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2018\/09\/24\/stay-at-home-moms-and-dads-account-for-about-one-in-five-u-s-parents\/#:~:text=The%20stay%2Dat%2Dhome%20share,about%20a%20quarter%2Dcentury%20earlier.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one in four mothers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stays at home with her children. And many other moms work reduced schedules to accommodate the needs of their families. While these women may not earn large paychecks (or any paycheck at all), the value of their unpaid labor is immense. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salary.com\/articles\/mother-salary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salary.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pegs the value of childcare, housekeeping and more that stay at home moms provide to be worth $178,201 a year. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This reality is further compounded if a breadwinning spouse or partner gets life insurance through work. While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lifehappens.org\/blog\/life-insurance-from-your-employer-usually-isnt-enough\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">life insurance from your employer is almost never enough<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is an important starting point for many families. Life insurance through a job usually only covers the worker.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Women lack financial literacy. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usfinancialcapability.org\/downloads\/NFCS_2015_Report_Natl_Findings.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study by FINRA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> revealed that women answered only 48% of financial literacy test questions correctly. Meanwhile, men answered 58% correctly. A lack of confidence in their financial know-how may keep many women from getting the life insurance they truly need.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Closing the Life Insurance Gender Gap<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a growing awareness about the outsize contributions women make toward the care of their families.
